Vera Hudson Reiter

Nov. 10, 1931 – Oct. 24, 2026

Vera was born in Greenport on Nov. 10, 1931 to Ida (Trout) Hudson and Samuel Hudson of Shelter Island. She enjoyed her childhood years living on this beautiful island with her parents and brother and a close extended family. Vera graduated from Shelter Island K-12 school in 1949.

She married William (Billy) Reiter of Greenport in 1952 and they remained in the area until Billy lost his battle with cancer in 1964. In 1966 Vera and her daughters moved to Ormond Beach, Fla. to be closer to her parents who had retired there. They returned to Long Island frequently, especially in summers to maintain close contact with their extended family.

Vera had many accomplishments in her long life including graduating with a degree in bookkeeping, driving a school bus, but mostly for always living life to its fullest. She never missed an opportunity to travel, get on a scary ride, or accept a challenge (do a 5k with her daughter at age 84).

She relocated to Marion, N.C. in 2023 to be cared for by her daughter Linda Mystic. Vera passed away peacefully at her assisted living facility, Rose Hill, on Oct. 24 after a battle with cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. She will be buried in Greenport.

Preceded in death by her parents, brother Nathaniel and husband Billy, she is survived by her daughters, Beverly Barry, Linda (Nick) Mystic; grandson Bill (Nicole) Barry; great granddaughter Kaitlyn Kepner; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is planned for spring in Greenport.
