William Marin Jr.

William Marin Jr. was born on March 29, 1949, to Iris and William Marin Sr. The oldest of three children, Bill developed an early love of music and photography. He not only gave guitar lessons but also played lead guitar and sang in several local bands. Bill also claimed his place behind the camera as the school photographer, a passion that fueled his career.

Bill attended Rochester Institute of Technology and then began his 35-year career at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As a photomicrographer, he had the unique profession of taking pictures through a microscope. A pioneer in the field, he went on to win multiple accolades including a spotlight in American Photographer Magazine. He later became the supervisor of digital photography and graphic design.

It was on a church hayride in high school that Bill met his wife, Janet. They settled in Southold, where they spent the remainder of their 52-year marriage. Bill was a proud father of two daughters. He enjoyed supporting them in their interests, as well as instilling important life lessons such as having a sense of humor, a love of music, and making sure to pay attention to the details.

Bill had many hobbies including astronomy, NASCAR, gardening, and driving his automotive toys. Bill also loved traveling to upstate New York, where he and his wife owned a beautiful property called “Konesquare” and would spend vacations camping with their daughters. While in retirement, he created and operated a successful coffee vending business. He also took great pride in his role as “Pa” to his four granddaughters.

Bill Marin lost his fight to Parkinson’s on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. He is survived by his wife Janet; daughters Alicia Shell and Lelaina Muth and her husband Jack; sister Lisbeth; brother Kevin; and four granddaughters Marin and Molly Shell and Elodie and Adeline Muth.

A private service will be held at a later time. Should you wish to celebrate Bill Marin’s life, the family asks that donations be made to the North Fork Animal Welfare League, as Bill was a proud cat Dad to Bailey and Nikita.
