Down a steep wooden staircase, in a small basement room to the right, an RCA TV sits atop a folding table. An Energy Guide sticker cuts off a portion of the TV’s bottom right corner. A cable on the left side dangles down to the floor, where it connects to an XBox One.

Jeffrey Avilas Ramos leans forward in a folding chair, his eyes fixated on the screen. The sounds of gunfire blast from the speakers. Ramos never flinches.  (more…)

Southold Town police are investigating whether Tuesday night’s armed robbery at a Mattituck video game store is related to a string of armed robberies across Suffolk County, including one at a Calverton gas station last week, the police chief said.

“I think there are some very similar cases that Suffolk County’s having right now,” said chief Martin Flatley.

The robbery occurred just after 5 p.m. at GameStop, a video game store located in the Mattituck Plaza at the corner of Main Road and Factory Avenue, police said.

A man entered the store and “displayed what appeared to be a handgun,” getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a police statement. No one was hurt in the robbery, police at the scene said.

The GameStop had been open at midnight for the early release of Call of Duty: Ghosts, the highly anticipated sequel to a popular war game series.

Police taped off the front of the store Tuesday night as a state K-9 unit helped search the area for the suspect.

Police Chief Martin Flatley said police were investigating whether the man drove away from the scene or was picked up after the robbery.

“With K9, if you have a very short [scent] track and you kind of lose things, maybe he got into a car, maybe he got picked up,” he explained.

Chief Flatley said police were compiling witness statements and surveillance footage from stores in the shopping center to determine how the robber fled.

The suspect remains at large.
