When the end comes, tears sometimes follow, but this was in the extreme.

After the horn sounded, ending the Suffolk County Class B girls soccer final Saturday night, the deliriously happy, triumphant Babylon players mobbed each other. Mattituck/Southold/Greenport players, meanwhile, looked devastated. Some just sat or squatted on the field, motionless, staring down. Others, bawling uncontrollably, were hugged and consoled by teammates.

MSG, which won last year’s Suffolk Class B championship in its first year of existence, took this 4-1 loss exceptionally hard. Coach Chris Golden later observed that the scene had a funeral feel to it. READ

The Mattituck/Southold/Greenport girls soccer team might have been out of breath, but the players were not out of words of praise for their performance after dropping a 1-0 decision at Sayville on Monday.

Even though the defending Suffolk County Class B champions had suffered their third loss of the season, they realized playing against Class A squads such as the Golden Flashes will prepare them for next month’s playoffs. READ

Mattituck/Southold/Greenport is back.

The girls soccer team formed to represent the three North Fork high schools had great success last year, rebounding dramatically from an 0-6 start to bag what had initially seemed an unlikely Suffolk County Class B championship in its inaugural season. Although 11 seniors from that team have moved on, MSG still has a bunch of returning veterans it can count on.

There is one glaring hole, though. Who will play goalkeeper? READ

In high school girls soccer, there are no golden goals — and there was no Golden goal Friday night, although Jillian Golden made her return to Mattituck/Southold/Greenport following an injury. But after 80 scoreless minutes, East Hampton and MSG went to 20 minutes of mandatory overtime. It was during the added time when MSG did what it couldn’t do during regulation time: score.

Overtime goals by Amber Rochon and Claire Gatz carried MSG to a 2-0 victory in a homecoming game at Mattituck High School. The result earned MSG a home playoff game, said coach Chris Golden. (more…)

Head coach Chris Golden surveyed the 45 young women training on the new Southold High School turf soccer field on Monday. They were the midst of their second practice of a unique merger. He said the first day of the transition that combined the Mattituck and Southold/Greenport teams was “great, perfect.” READ

As they slowly walked off the field at Islip High School Friday night, there was not a dry eye among the Mattituck Tuckers.

The girls soccer team just played the game of its lives, going toe to toe with undefeated Babylon in the Suffolk County Class B championship game before enduring an excruciating 2-1 overtime loss. READ
