The East Hampton Town Board announced this morning that the scheduled public hearing for this afternoon on proposed airport restrictions has been postponed due to the weather until Thursday, March 12.

The board’s announcement stated: “The East Hampton Town Board public hearing on proposed airport restrictions has been postponed because of the significant snowstorm that hit the region overnight, making for treacherous travel. The meeting—originally set to start at 4:30 tonight at LTV Studios at 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott—will now take place at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the same location.

The Town Board has scheduled this hearing in order to listen to and consider comments from the public regarding four proposed local laws designed to restrict operations at East Hampton Airport in an effort to mitigate aircraft noise following decades of noise complaints from residents.”

The East Hampton Town Board is expecting a big crowd Thursday for a public hearing on proposed aircraft restrictions at the town’s airport.

The venue for the meeting on low-flying and noisy aircraft — especially helicopters — is a TV studio, rather than the regular board meeting room. The need for more space is due to an issue that has united residents in opposition not only from the Hamptons, but from the North Fork and Shelter Island as well.

The East Hampton Town Board did nothing, and action was taken.

What seems like a contradiction actually means that East Hampton has regained control of its airport and can finally address the issue of helicopters buzzing East End communities.

This power was gained by not applying for grants from the Federal Aviation Administration in the new year. (more…)

New battle lines have been drawn in the fight over aircraft noise buzzing through East End communities.

Peter Wolf, an author and expert on land uses, along with Kenneth Lipper, a former deputy mayor of New York City, have hired a top Manhattan law firm to make a case for banning all helicopters and seaplanes from the East Hampton Airport.  (more…)

Too low, too loud, too many.

That was the consensus from nearly 50 residents from East End communities who spoke at a packed public meeting Wednesday evening about a record number of aircraft — mostly helicopters — buzzing their homes this summer.  (more…)
