To the editor:

In response to comments made recently both in print and at public meetings concerning ongoing changes to Southold’s — and much of the country’s — recycling practices, it is true that the single-stream approach ultimately failed, but that is largely due to import restrictions in China on the portion of the stream that proved non-recyclable due either to lack of local markets or contamination with materials that turned paper products (the most valuable recyclables) into garbage. To the editor:

The FAA cannot be allowed to interpret a law, it must, as all must, follow the law. The FAA is making a mockery of the FAA Reauthorization Act, sponsored by Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) and the Congress and president who signed it into law. (more…)

The federal government decided in 2009 to sell Plum Island to the highest bidder, presumably a private owner. In 2013 Donald Trump announced his desire to purchase Plum Island to create a golf resort. Southold Town had no interest in that plan, which quickly fizzled.

Leading conservation organizations, including Save our Sound and Group for the East End, are suing to block the sale. A federal judge denied a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in January. Congress can and should act to permanently block the sale. It has failed to do so. READ

I read with interest the story on Duffy Drum and the Clipper Race. I was born and raised in Southold and graduated 1982. I’ve lived in Australia for the past 30 years, but own a house in Southold and return every year with my wife, Penelope, and our five children. READ

To the editor:

I am heartened by more than one article in the Feb. 22 Suffolk Times. I appreciated the words of Steve Choi, the executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, who responded to Lee Zeldin’s bill, identifying it as “shameless political posturing.” Such a bill would cause many respectable immigrants to be apprehended for no reason at all, and cause citizens to be unnecessarily alarmed.  READ

Even though I’m sure the article about the new Sports East project was meant to excite parents, you should also alert them to how the indoor sports facilities now springing up across America may be exacerbating a growing epidemic among young athletes. READ

After months of working closely with the Southold Town planning department to address any concern it had with our production-only site plan for Threes Brewing East, I was surprised that board member Jim Rich voted against the board’s State Environmental Quality Review Act negative declaration that would allow us to move forward in the approval process.  READ
