Greenport:Southold field hockey player Madison Hilton 091916

Before she became a field hockey player, Madison Hilton was a fan, with a personal rooting interest.

Hilton was a young girl when she attended Greenport/Southold high school games to watch her older sister, Victoria, play for the Clippers. Madison has long since become a participant, thanks in part to her roots as a spectator.

Playing a high school field hockey game with only 11 players (and no substitutes available) is hard enough, as the Greenport/Southold Clippers know only too well. But playing with 10 players? And against a talented team like Pierson/Bridgehampton? READ

CLIPPERS 2, BAYMEN 1

When the scoreboard clock at Hampton Bays High School reached 0:00, no field hockey sticks were raised in celebration by the Greenport/Southold players. There was no hooting and hollering, either.

But there was a good deal of relief.

Relief. Yes, that would be the word that may best describe the Clippers’ reaction to their first win in 25 days. (more…)

CLIPPERS 8, BAYMEN 2

The path in front of the field hockey goal at Greenport High School could be named Madison Avenue. It would be a fitting appellation.

That’s because the Greenport/Southold team has not one, but two Madisons — Madison Hilton and Madison Tabor. In their brief time together on the field, the duo has already picked up a joint nickname: “Maddy squared.”

Through the Clippers’ first two games this season, “Maddy squared” has combined for three goals, including two in an 8-2 rout of visiting Hampton Bays on Thursday. (more…)

PREVIEW

In high school field hockey, it’s not chronological age that counts so much as years of varsity experience.

Madison Tabor, Toni Esposito and Katie Tuthill are all sophomores. They are also in their fourth year and among Greenport/Southold’s top players.

The Clippers (5-10) are young and experienced, the best of both worlds, really. They can expect to be competitive this season and have a bright future to look forward to at the same time. (more…)
