Center Moriches. Again.

The cycle continues.

For a fourth straight year, Mattituck saw its high school boys soccer season come to an end with a playoff loss to Center Moriches. Similar to Mattituck’s pair of 1-0 losses to the Red Devils during the regular season, Wednesday’s Suffolk County Class B semifinal was a tight, defensive battle, full of drama and, in the end, pain and disappointment for the Tuckers. Bryan Flores is obviously the same person he was last year. He’s not nearly the same soccer player, though.

Last year Flores was a little-used reserve player, one of the last on Mattituck’s bench. “He didn’t play much,” coach Will Hayes said. “He came to practice every single day with a smile on his face and just kept grinding.”

Flores participated in a couple of indoor practices over the winter, but didn’t play for Mattituck’s summer league team. Hayes wasn’t even sure if Flores would come out for the team in training camp before receiving a text message.

Then, Hayes saw the new and improved Flores, who is taller and stronger. The senior left wing reported to camp fit and ready. READ

Midway through the opening half, Mattituck High School boys soccer coach Will Hayes looked down at the grass on the field.

“Gee, a penny,” he said, pocketing it.

Up until then Hayes did not need much luck — his team had rolled to a three-goal advantage over Greenport — but perhaps he could have used a little later Tuesday afternoon. The Tuckers lost senior goalkeeper James Jacobs to a sprained right ankle early in the second half of their 3-0 Suffolk County League VII victory. READ
