Joe Townsend Jr. was the third person we met when my wife, Joan, and I moved to the North Fork in 1977. That’s because he was the nephew of the first two people we met, Barbara and Stuart Dorman, publishers of The Suffolk Times, the community newspaper we purchased in partnership with Joan’s brother David. As he stared down his inevitable demise, Joseph Townsend Jr. approached his fate with an unwavering fortitude. In the first few years after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Mr. Townsend traveled as often as he could, relishing time on the water in his 24-foot Mako motorboat.
Peconic Land Trust unveiled a plaque in late December honoring East Marion resident Joseph Townsend Jr., a former Greenport mayor and Southold Town councilman who also served as a member of the Trust’s board of directors. READ
