The New York State Legislature approved a bill to ban offshore drilling Tuesday.

The bill amends the Environmental Conservation Law to prohibit offshore oil and gas production. It would prevent the state Department of Environmental Conservation from leasing state-owned underwater coastal areas for drilling and also stop the Office of General Services from authorizing leases that would increase oil or natural gas production in federal waters. I read with a great deal of sadness of the passing of Rich Fiedler (“An artist who defined Greenport,” Sept. 22). I have several of his prints in my office that capture the unique beauty and character of eastern Long Island. Each election year in October, my staff and I would walk the Village of Greenport visiting with local merchants. READ

LaValle, Palumbo meet with North Fork students

High school students from Greenport and Southold filed into the library at Mattituck High School Friday, joining Mattituck students seated in chairs forming a “U.”

Seated across from the students was State Senator Ken LaValle and State Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo, who fielded questions from the students about gun laws, school safety and mental health issues.

“I love the opportunity to come and interact with students because you are the future,” Mr. LaValle said. — READ

You don’t get to spend a lifetime in office without being an effective legislator.

Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson), senior member in the New York State Senate, was first elected in 1976. In 40 years, he’s proven his ability to bring home the bacon for his district. He’s remained mostly scandal-free and has run for re-election without much of a fight from Democrats for decades.
