The merger of Peconic Bay Medical Center and the newly rebranded Northwell Health won’t mean the local hospital will play second fiddle to the bigger health system, said Northwell president and CEO Michael Dowling.

Instead, it’s bringing the hospitals together as one “family.”

ELIH-webLeaders with Eastern Long Island Hospital had hoped to pick a partner organization by the end of May, but the Greenport hospital’s board of directors has instead decided to continue negotiations with a pair of the area’s largest health entities before making a final decision.

On Friday morning, Andrew Mitchell, PBMC Health’s president and CEO, held one of his organization’s regular “town hall meetings.” The sessions, open to the health care system’s 1,300 employees, are meant to give insiders a glimpse into what’s going on at the former Central Suffolk Hospital, headquartered at the intersection of Route 58 and Roanoke Avenue.

But Friday’s session wasn’t the average town hall meeting. Rumors had started to spread. Whispers had begun to circulate.

Dr. Richard Kubiak, the hospital’s chief medical officer, couldn’t even get into the room. (more…)

Officials from Stony Brook Medical Center and North Shore-LIJ medical care systems confirmed reports Thursday that they are in affiliation talks with both Peconic Bay Medical Center and Eastern Long Island Hospital.

The news comes two years after Southampton Hospital announced that it’s been in talks with Stony Brook. (more…)
