A stop sign is being proposed to help slow down drivers on Old Sound Avenue just past Love Lane in Mattituck.
The town last week restriped a portion of Old Sound Avenue with arrows and delineated parking spaces to make it more apparent to drivers that the road was one-way westbound up to Westphalia Avenue in response to resident’s concerns. READ
Around noon Friday, the skies opened up for about 90 minutes, parking lots and basements flooded, lawns in the middle of a business district had “high tide marks” and a car even floated away.
The Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association has unveiled its recommendations to improve the three-way intersection at Main Road, Love Lane and Old Sound Avenue in Mattituck and is proposing Southold Town ban eastbound turns from Love Lane to Main Road in order to make the area safer.
The danger that lurks at the intersection of Love Lane and Main Road is abundantly clear. A winding road, a busy part of town with considerable foot traffic and drivers using Old Sound Avenue to reach an active church and a popular local theater add up to increased risk for motorists and pedestrians alike. Residents at a well-attended meeting for the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association Wednesday night shared new ideas to remake a “dangerous” intersection near Love Lane, the civic association’s president said Thursday. READ
The Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association is expected on Wednesday night to discuss developer Paul Pawlowski’s proposed apartment project, as well as ideas to make the intersection of Main Road and Love Lane safer and more pedestrian friendly. READ

Early on Tuesday, before most shops along Love Lane had opened, business owners, residents and Mattituck Chamber of Commerce members gathered to discuss the possibility of closing down part of Old Sound Avenue to vehicular traffic.
Hosted by the chamber, the meeting was held to allow people to voice any concerns regarding the proposal so that potential problems can be addressed. (more…)
