I’ll start with a small world and hope you can fill in the end. Pete Nathanson and his bride, Chris Franke, were going through customs in Bayonne, N.J., last Thursday after a cruise to Bermuda aboard Liberty of the Seas. The immigration man looked at their papers and asked, “Where is this Orient, N.Y.? Other folks from there just passed through here before you.” So the question is: Who else from Oysterponds was among the 5,000-plus passengers? We can’t wait for the answer!  (more…)

Students from Oysterponds Elementary School have spent the past several months producing a video on the historical significance of the local whaling industry as part of the town’s celebration of its 375th anniversary this year.  (more…)

Early last week I was behind a ginormous truck that was scoring the middle of the newly laid blacktop on the North Road. It didn’t occur to me what that was all about until late last night when I was headed west after the last ferry from Connecticut. At some point I migrated onto the painted yellow line in the middle of the road and my tires shrieked out an unpleasant chant that returned my attention to the road. Hopefully that will keep others less familiar than I in their lane as they make their way “up island” from the Point.  (more…)

John and Jay McKasty took a slight detour on their way back from their winter holiday in Fort Myers, Fla., so they could catch up with two former Orient friends. They visited first with Doris Morgan in New Oxford, Pa., and then caught up with Sheila Bachman, who folded her tent in Montana and now lives with her daughter Barbara in Drumore, Pa. They really enjoyed catching up with these extraordinary ladies.  (more…)

Oysterponds Elementary School music teacher Linwood Bogden has been selected by SCOPE Education Services of Long Island to receive the Teacher Services Award at the organization’s 14th annual School District Awards Dinner.

Ms. Bogden of Orient has been teaching music at the school for 10 years and is being recognized for providing exceptional instrumental, string and vocal programs to the pre-K through sixth-grade district.

The award will be presented to her March 23 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

Even though I orchestrated the delivery of my Oysterponds sofa to Sarah’s new residence in Florida, there was still a little flutter of the heart as I pulled up and spotted the Jernick’s truck on the street. It polishes the glow of “hometown.” I mentioned it to a friend, who said she felt the same way while vacationing in Booth Bay Harbor, when a Hampton Jitney tour full of Southold folks pulled in. This morning I heard a TV anchor say “familiarity breeds comfort.” I agree.  (more…)
