On a blustery, overcast day last week, the blades of the 156-foot wind turbine just west of the grapevines at Pindar Vineyards cut through the air with a quiet whooshing noise. Each spin of the turbine — one of a handful of units that tower over North Fork’s wineries — has helped make the vineyard greener.
The North Fork may be the next location in New York to receive state-of-the-art weather technology that can provide officials with more accurate, real-time information.

Herodotus Damianos, a medical doctor, North Fork wine pioneer and the founder of Pindar Vineyards, Long Island’s biggest wine producer, died on Monday, according to a family spokesman. He was 82.
