The mouth of Greenport’s Sterling Harbor is filling up with sand, and local officials say it needs to be dredged, something that hasn’t been done for a long time. 

“My understanding in talking to a fair amount of boaters coming out of the creek is that they’re starting to run aground,” Trustee Mary Bess Phillips said at last Thursday’s Village Board work session. “It’s getting shallower and shallower as storms keep coming through.” READ

The Village of Greenport is holding a lottery for deer hunters looking to bow hunt in Moore’s Woods.

The village is issuing a maximum of five permits for use of the western end woods for bow hunting from Oct. 1 thru Dec. 31.  (more…)

Greenport Village is bringing back its recently departed village treasurer on a contract basis to help hammer out its budget plan for the next fiscal year.

At Monday night’s Village Board meeting, Mayor David Nyce explained that although former treasurer Charlene Kagel had originally planned to retire following the year’s budget preparation, she had decided to retire sooner to spend more time with her grandchildren.  (more…)
