Some of us choose to spend the summer at local beaches, while others enjoy attending barbecues, winery events, yard sales and fundraiser galas. Then there are those who prefer to sit on the front porch and watch it all go by. You can do it all or do nothing at all and still enjoy it out here.

Happy birthday to Ed Rudder and David Surozenski Sr. on Aug. 6; Rusty Ackroyd, Jacqueline Ruggles and Tom Schade on the 8th; Chris Hall on the 9th; and both Mike Erdman and Kelly Hilary on the 11th.

It wouldn’t be summer without the Southold Historical Society’s annual ice cream social. This popular event will take place this Saturday, Aug. 7, from 1-4 p.m. at the Main Road complex. Bring your family and weekend guests for an afternoon of old-fashioned fun and local history. Admission is free, but refreshment tickets will be sold.

Good luck to Karl Szymczak, recent Southold High School grad, who will spend eight weeks in Great Lakes, Ill. at United States Navy boot camp. His parents, Joe and Linda, sister, Connie, and grandparents Robert and Jean Wilkinson wish him well.

Incoming SHS seniors should have received appointment cards for their senior portraits on Aug. 9. If you haven’t gotten one, call the high school office at 765-5081. Portraits will be taken in the auditorium beginning at 9:30 a.m.

On Friday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. Southold Free Library will present classical pianist Judith Alstadter with a program entitled, “Music: The Language of Love.” This free concert is sponsored by the Friends.

Jean Dempsey shared a quote with me that perfectly sums up the precious weeks ahead: “July is like Saturday, August is like Sunday.” So appropriate.
