The NOFO Rock and Folk Fest will return to the North Fork with a new lineup July 30-31, according to event organizer Josh Horton.

Mr. Horton announced this weekend in an e-mail to the Suffolk Times that Foghat, Commander Cody, Elvin Bishop, and John Sebastian will be among this year’s performers.

Southold Town was considering earlier this year an informal request to hold the event at Strawberry Fields in Mattituck, although it might still be held at Peconic Bay Winery, the site of last year’s festival.

Mr. Horton was at odds with the town for weeks leading up to last year’s festival, which took place without incident in July. The problem had been a discrepancy between the low number of attendees and vendors predicted on the permit application for the festival — 800 people a day — and the much larger throng predicted in public relations material sent by organizers to potential vendors. It put the expected crowd at “well over 15,000.”

The lower prediction turned out to be accurate. Mr. Horton maintained last year that the figure in the letter to vendors was a clerical error.

Last year’s event, which featured performances from Mountain and Richie Havens, led to a $5,000 donation to the East End Arts Council.

  • Went last year and had a blast. Will definitely go again. Hopefully more than 70 people will show up this year!

  • Something positive to look forward too. Hope they have more local talent mixed in. Thats always a plus. Theres a lot out here. Why not have them all play? They can open early and be mingled in around the headliners. Theres a dozen bands that are awesome that could fit right in! Support the LOCAL artists too!!!

  • This is an awesome event. Kudo’s to the organizers for their time, effort and donation.

  • “The lower prediction turned out to be accurate. Mr. Horton maintained last year that the figure in the letter to vendors was a clerical error.” Bullshit…

  • There actually were 800-900 people there each day last year 🙂

  • Of the 14 acts scheduled for 2011, 8 are from Long Island. In addition, Foghat is now based in Suffolk county too. On the second stage, dozens of local artists will take part as well.

  • who determines the local artists selection?

  • There’s obviously not enough hours in the day to open it up to everyone (understandably, the town does impose limits to when it starts and ends). There was also plenty of local talent “mingled in” last year and there will be again this year. Don’t forget that a good majority of the wineries, including the one that hosts this concert, support local artists all year long by having them play at their facilities.

  • They should also get Loudon Wainwright III, who lives on Shelter Island.

  • True but smaller acts can play the wineries. Larger ones that live out here dont have many options aside from say Four Doors Down or something. Exposure at a festival and the experience would be great plus letting more people hear their styles of music. There arent as many larger acts as one would think that are ready to play this. Plus with only one person in charge there is no “meeting of the minds” its mostly about who knows who and there are no ballots to vote on. But, overall its a fun time and its great to have some music out here.
