The upcoming three-day weekend brings a variety of Independence Day celebrations and events to the North Fork.
Living Water Full Gospel Church in Riverhead got the weekend off to a musical start with “God Bless the USA” at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The concert will be repeated Sunday at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Riverhead Raceway will shoot off fireworks that will be visible all along Route 58, starting around dusk. Rain date: July 9.
The Greenport Firemen’s Carnival will offer fireworks Saturday and Monday, starting at 10 p.m. at the Moore’s Lane polo grounds. The carnival runs tonight (Thursday, June 30) through July 4, from 6 to 11 p.m. nightly.
Sunday begins with Oysterponds Heritage Day, a community celebration hosted by the Oysterponds Historical Society. A parade kicks off the festivities at noon on Village Lane, Orient, followed by a reading of the Declaration of Independence, music by the North Fork Chorale, then a picnic, games and music in Poquatuck Park until 3 p.m.
Downtown Riverhead will be the site of an Independence Day Celebration Sunday at 5 p.m. along the Peconic Riverfront. Music and entertainment plus fireworks are sponsored by the Riverhead Business Improvement District.
The Fourth brings forth two more parades: The first, hosted by the New Suffolk Civic Association, starts at 11 a.m. at the corner of Tuttle Road and New Suffolk Road, proceeding to the town beach. The Southold Village Merchants’ march starts at noon, proceeding from Boisseau Avenue to Tuckers Lane.
