Southold, Oysterponds, Mattituck-Cutchogue schools closed Thursday

The Oysterponds, Southold, and Mattituck-Cutchogue school districts announced they would be closed Thursday in the wake of Sandy wreaking havoc on the North Fork earlier this week.

Southold Union Free School District said that a “new development” about the power to part of the school’s campus led them to cancel school Thursday, despite school being in session Wednesday.

“Our decision to open today did not have any bearing on the change for tomorrow,” superintendent David Gamberg wrote in a statement.

Mattituck-Cutchogue schools would be closed Thursday as well due to power outages.

Oysterponds school superintendent Dick Malone said the school will be closed Thursday and Friday due to power outages and downed trees entangled in wires.

The superintendent for Greenport and New Suffolk school districts was not immediately available for comment.
