It’s already been a historic season for the Mattituck/Greenport wrestling team.
Beginning Friday morning in Albany, the Tuckers will take aim at the exclamation point on the season by sending wrestlers to the podium of the Division II New York State Wrestling Championships. The two-day tournament begins Friday at Times Union Center in Albany and the Division-II champion Tuckers will have three wrestlers competing for the top spot in the state.
Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. The Suffolk Times will be providing live coverage from the event.
Senior Tomasz Filipkowski, the most veteran of the group, narrowly missed earning a spot on the podium as an all-state wrestler last season. The top six wrestlers in each eight are all-state.
This year, Filipkowski (33-2) will open the tournament at 170 pounds against Daniel Smith, a junior from South Jefferson (Section III). If he wins, Filipkowski will face a tall order in the quarterfinals. He’ll be lined up against the top seed, freshman Christian Dietrich of Greene (Section IV). As a seventh-grader, Dietrich was sixth in the state at 152 pounds. Last year his season was wiped out by an injury, according to the Press & Sun Bulletin.
Last year Filipkowski lost his first-round match before coming back to win his next two. He lost in overtime decision in his final match, leaving him one win away from reaching the podium.
Senior Chris Baglivi (31-1) will wrestle for the second straight year at states. He’ll open the tournament against Matt Booth of Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Pine Valley (Section VI) at 195 pounds. Baglivi went 1-2 at states last year.
Junior Bobby Becker (24-12) will wrestle his first time in the state tournament. He’ll open up against senior Drew Longo of Ardsley (Section I) at 138 pounds.
