Catch a virtual tour of Plum Island tonight
Local environmentalists will present a “virtual tour” of Plum Island and go over the latest efforts to protect it at “Preserving Plum Island for Future Generations,” which takes place this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Floyd Memorial Public Library in Greenport.
During the event, Save the Sound special projects coordinator Chris Cryder will give a virtual tour of the 840-acre island using new photos taken by Bob Lorenz. Participants will have the chance to see parts of the island not seen by the public before, according to a press release.
Attendees will also learn about the most recent efforts to protect Plum Island, including the status of the latest congressional and senatorial actions. The animal disease center, which has long been located on the island, has been slated to move to Kansas. Those plans, however, remain in limbo as costs are expected to exceed $1 billion.
They’ll also hear more about Save the Sound’s potential lawsuit against two federal agencies to try and halt the public sale of the island, according to a release.
In addition to Mr. Cryder, the event’s panel members are Bob DeLuca, executive director of Group for the East End; John Turner, spokesperson for the Preserve Plum Island Coalition; and Louise Harrison, a Southold resident and past employee of U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
