Donna Farley was 28 weeks pregnant with her third child in 2013, when she noticed that something was different this time — and not in a good way.

Ms. Farley was experiencing abdominal pain that worsened as the baby grew. So the Mattituck resident visited her doctor and a sonogram revealed good news: Her baby was fine.

The event was born out of humble beginnings.

A storm blew across the North Fork overnight during the inaugural Relay For Life, sending participants scrambling for cover. Rain poured. Wind blew. And halfway through, the event was over. READ

Cheerleaders from the North Fork Dance Academy helped pump up the crowd.

Purple ribbons and balloons lined Main Road Saturday, leading the way to Mitchell Park in Greenport where the annual Relay for Life fundraiser was hosted for the first time.

Participants from as far as Coram and Stony Brook came out for the event, which started at noon and continues to midnight. Survivors wearing white sashes walked the park with supporters, many sporting creative T-shirts.

Southold’s Eighth Annual Relay For Life, benefitting the American Cancer Society, was held Saturday night at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic. Here are some photo highlights of this year’s event:

More than $50,000 has already been raised for this year’s Relay For Life that begins Saturday night at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic.

The eighth annual American Cancer Society Benefit begins with an opening ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony is at 9:30 p.m. Donors can choose to dedicate a personal luminaria in honor, memory or support of a loved one. Or donation dollars can be assigned to a team or participant to help them reach their goal.

The event will feature live music along with Henna tattoos, chair massages, a bake sale and face painting.

Check-in begins at 4 p.m.
