Ring that bell

Residents who would like what could be a last chance to ring the bell in the steeple at the historic First Baptist Church on Main Street in Greenport are invited to do so between 6 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28.

The church steeple is being removed sometime in the next two weeks, with plans to replace it as soon as the congregation can raise approximately $12,000, the amount it’s going to cost for a new one.

Recent heavy rains revealed the need to replace the old steeple to avoid damage to the church interior. It may not be possible to put the bell in the existing steeple into the new one, the Rev. Tom LaMothe said.

A peek at ‘peak oil’ problem

The North Fork Environmental Council is sponsoring a special workshop by Isidore Doroski on the depletion of world oil reserves and its repercussions for North Fork residents and businesses. Mr. Doroski is a member of the Riverhead Town energy advisory committee.

The free workshop will start at 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Riverhead Free Library. No reservations are required, but seats are limited so plan to arrive early.

The increasing gap between rates of oil production and discovery of new reserves is moving the world oil market to a critical point called “peak oil,” at which oil production and availability decrease even as demand rises. Some argue that we’ve already passed this point.

The workshop’s goal is to raise awareness, give local residents a peek into their energy future and motivate them to take action and embrace possible solutions to this growing problem.
