Mother’s Day give-back

Taking Mom out to dinner Sunday to celebrate Mother’s Day? You can make your money go further by taking your mom to one of the following restaurants that have promised to contribute a portion of their profits to the North Fork Women’s Resource Center. The center provides a wide range of programs for women in the area and is supported from contributions and sales of goods at its Riverhead-based thrift store.

Participating restaurants are: a Mano, A Touch of Venice, Chowder Pot Pub, Cliff’s Elbow Room, Cooperage Inn, DoLittle’s, Elbow Room East, Hellenic Snack Bar and Restaurant, Jamesport Country Kitchen, Legends, Lobster Roll, Michelangelo’s, Modern Snack Bar, O’Mally’s, Orient by the Sea Marina and Restaurant, Porto Bello, Rhumbline, Tweed’s, Soundview, Townsend Manor Inn and Village Pizza.

Bishop to address EMCA

Congressman Tim Bishop will speak at the annual meeting of the East Marion Community Association on Saturday, May 15, 10 a.m. to noon, at the East Marion firehouse. He will discuss Plum Island and other issues affecting the East End.

Become a mentor

A new committee formed by CAST and the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island will host an informational presentation on mentoring at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport on Wednesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. Please attend to learn how you can enrich the life of a child and make a better future possible. Flooding victims, take note

The Long Island Organizing Network will hold a forum for those affected by recent flooding at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, at First Baptist Church of Riverhead on Northville Turnpike. Many public officials have been asked to attend. To participate, call 631-431-4104 or 727-1435.

Theater group offers two workshop opportunities

You don’t have to be an actor to participate in North Fork Community Theatre. Volunteer Information Night, Tuesday, May 18, 7 p.m. at the NFCT building in Mattituck, will highlight the many behind-the-scenes jobs that make every production possible. Workshop on kids and media

Cornell Cooperative Extension will present a workshop discussing research on media use in children and teens and how to reduce the associated risks. Educator Tim Jahn will lead the session on Monday, May 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the cooperative building in Riverhead. The cost is $5 per person. To register call Laurie Wells, 727-7850, ext. 340.

Auction raises funds for Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship

The Greenport High School Class of 1993 Jeremy Hamilton Memorial Scholarship auction is under way. The auction is designed to raise funds for a scholarship in memory of Mr. Hamilton, who succumbed to brain cancer in March.

Those who wish to bid on items can do so at biddingforgood.com and enter jhamiltonscholarship in “Search Auctions” field. Bidding continues until Saturday, May 8.

If you don’t wish to participate in the auction, but would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, a check payable to GHS Class of 1993 Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship Fund should be sent to P.O. Box 481, Greenport, NY 11944.

Money will be used to award an annual scholarship to a Greenport High School senior who demonstrates educational ability, involvement in extracurricular activities and a strong sense of a career objective. Students who wish to apply for the scholarship need to submit an essay describing themselves and their goals and accomplishments. Applications are available at the school guidance office or by e-mailing [email protected]. Completed applications must be submitted by May 14.

Get a garden club scholarship

The Riverhead Garden Club will offer up to two $500 scholarships to students who attend or have been accepted by a post-secondary institution where they intend to major in horticulture or a related field, such as agriculture, environmental science, landscape design or conservation.

Eligibility is limited to residents of towns represented among the club’s members: Aquebogue, Baiting Hollow, Calverton, Center Moriches, Cutchogue, East Quogue, Eastport, Greenport, Hampton Bays, Jamesport, Laurel, Manorville, Patchogue, Ridge, Riverhead, Rocky Point, South Jamesport, Southold and Wading River.

Forum on teen depression

Dale Camhi of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will address parents and teens about this critical issue on Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at the Southold Town Recreation Center. Rachel Priest will share her personal story. Sponsored by the Southold Youth Bureau.

Artist-in-residence sought

William Steeple Davis Trust of Orient is accepting applications, due June 30, for an artist-in-residence for the period Oct. 15, 2010, through Oct. 1, 2011. The program offers “a temporary place of abode for persons of good character.” Past recipients have included painters, sculptors, photographers, writers, poets and musicians. Sign up for kindergarten

Kindergarten registration and screening for children entering Southold and New Suffolk public schools will take place on May 20, 21, 24, 25 and 26. Children who will turn 5 by Dec. 1, 2010, are eligible for kindergarten in September.

Parents must provide the child’s birth certificate, two documents indicating district residency, and a health history that shows immunization against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and Hib. Proof of residential custody is required for legally separated or divorced parents.

EELHA offers scholarships

East End Livestock and Horseman’s Association is offering two $800 scholarships. Eligible applicants are graduating high school seniors (John M. Appelt Scholarship) or college students (Robert Krudop Scholarship) from any of the five eastern Long Island towns who are studying or planning to study veterinary medicine or any program associated with care or management in animal-related fields.
