Cutchogue-New Suffolk

Summer has arrived for the Cutchogue Homemakers! Their season ended with a beautiful luncheon at Vineyard Caterers. They’d planned to host Southold Town police dog Ajax, who died last year, at their last meeting. Unfortunately, Ajax’s successor, Hutzin, was still in training and unavailable, so they hope to meet him next season. The members are grateful to the “brave and wonderful” Mary Pedersen for stepping up to the plate, to accept co-presidency with the group’s “president of presidents,” Bobbie Rubenstein. No doubt the Homemakers will have more sheets, towels and barbecues as family and friends visit during the season. But they look forward to this dynamic duo presiding over the next season and to “Rally Day” in September when they will all be together again.

Happy birthday to Colby Suglia, who turned 8 yesterday. Birthday wishes are being sent to Kathleen MacDonald, who turns 26 on May 30, from her big sister, Jennifer Boese.

Adorned in lime green T-shirts, approximately 112 sixth-graders, teachers and parent chaperones traveled to New York City to see “The Lion King.” The trip included enough time to sightsee at the Apple Store, FAO Schwarz, M&M, Ferris Wheel at Toys “R” Us, Dylan’s Candy Store, Mickey Mantle’s, ESPN Zone, the Grand Marquis Hotel and more. During the show, the audience marveled with unadulterated amazement at the procession of giraffes, elephants, hippopotamuses and birds in “balletic flight.” Hats off to the organizers for a well-run trip.

During the trip I got to catch up with T.J. Behr and his mom, Carolee. The Cutchogue Fire Department’s Relay for Life team raised $1,200 at its recent yard sale, bring its total to $4,000. They hope to continue to raise funds and look forward to the event itself. Way to go!

Parents and siblings of members arrived back at school in plenty of time for the very first fourth-grade band and choral concert. Congratulations to all the young musicians and singers on their performances. Bravo!

The Boy Scouts of Troop 39 began their visit to Gettysburg National Military Park at the museum and visitor center. The gallery there features Civil War relics, interactive programs and multimedia presentations. Visitors gain an understanding of the battle through the film “A New Birth of Freedom,” featuring the Gettysburg Cyclorama, which creates the illusion of extra depth and makes one feel as if they are on the battlefield. Touched, I listened to Ron and Alex Goeller describe the awe-inspiring appreciation that derived from seeing the film. Afterward, the group moved onto the battlefield for a 17-mile hike.

Pack 39’s Cub Scouts were not to be left behind, and made a trip to Battleship Cove in Massachusetts for a “Nautical Nights” adventure steeped in history, patriotism and pride. The journey began as the scouts and their parents carried sleeping bags, pillows and backpacks up the gangway, entering a different reality. The scouts explored the ship thoroughly, investigating the guns, climbing on the 40MM mounts, cranking the hand wheels and climbing up and down the ladders.

With Memorial Day upon us please take a moment to honor those in service of our country. May G-d bring them home safe and sound!

I have an early deadline for next week, so get any news you want to see in the June 3 issue to me by tonight!

Enjoy your weekend and have a good week!
