SOUTHAMPTON — In the convoluted power-rating system employed by Suffolk County high school football, playoff scenarios are not always clear-cut. That being said, it’s safe to say this: the Greenport / Southold / Mattituck / Shelter Island Porters gave their playoff chances a big boost while at the same time dealing a severe blow to the Southampton Mariners’ postseason hopes on Friday night.
With inspired play from their defense, the Porters prevailed in a defensive battle, 15-0, in a Suffolk County Division IV football game, most of the second half of which was played in the rain. It was the third straight win for the Porters (4-2) and the third loss in a row for the Mariners (2-4). The top eight of the division’s 12 teams will qualify for the playoffs, and the Porters have set themselves up to be among those eight.
Asked after the game what the win did for his team’s playoff prospects, Porters Coach Jack Martilotta replied, “It can only help.”
