Update: Greenport Village code committee meeting cancelled

The Greenport Village Code Committee meeting scheduled for Friday has been cancelled.

The committee was expected to discuss rental permit legislation during its monthly meeting, but cancelled the meeting after they did not have enough members for a quorum.

Village officials have previously said the proposed permit legislation aims to improve the quality of life for renters, as well as prevent overcrowding and deter blight. But during a July 23 public hearing on the draft rental law, former mayor and real estate agent Dave Kapell blasted village officials because he believes the proposal would place a hardship on immigrant families.

The Village Board voted to hold the public hearing open and send the draft law back to the code committee for further review.

In addition to reworking the proposed rental permit law, the committee is also drafting the village’s first subdivision code, as well as box store legislation. According to the agenda agenda, accessory buildings and a proposed ban on bamboo would also have been discussed.

The topics listed in Friday’s agenda will be discussed at their next meeting on Oct. 12, officials said.
