For all in intents and purposes, the Mattituck/Greenport high school wrestling team won the Suffolk County League VII championship on Wednesday night.

The Tuckers recorded three pins and won the three final matches en route to a 40-22 victory over host Port Jefferson.

The win left defending league champion Mattituck/Greenport (18-3, 7-0) alone atop the league standings with a Friday home meeting against The Stony Brook School (1-5, 1-5) that will finish the regular season. They look likely to close out a second straight undefeated league season.

Brian Pelan (132 pounds), Timmy Schmidt (138) and Adam Goode (195) won on pins. Pelan, who recorded his fall against Dallas Brett with 54 seconds remaining in the first period, gave the Tuckers a 15-13 lead they never relinquished. Schmidt pinned Dane Roberts with 31 seconds left.

James Hoeg had the most dramatic ending. Trailing by 2-1 entering the final 30 seconds of his 145-pound bout, Hoeg took down Tyler D’Accordo with 23 seconds remaining to earn 2 points and register a 3-2 triumph.

After the Royals (7-2, 6-1) pulled within 24-22 after Ryan Woodward bested Christian Angelson at 170, 3-2, the Tuckers rolled off three successive wins. First, Sal Loverde won by forfeit, giving the visitors 6 points. Adam Goode pinned Joe Sottile with 1:18 left in the first period at 195 and Connor Andersen defeated Jake Myrhe at 220, 9-1, to close out the contest.

Jack Bokina (99), Timmy Pelan (113) and Tyler Webb (120) also recorded victories for the Tuckers.
