Hector Fairweather Pemberton

Longtime Orient resident Hector Fairweather Pemberton died July 16 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 92. 

He was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Greenport to Daisy (Penney) and Henry Bruce Pemberton and graduated from Greenport High School. He married Jessie M. (née Sledjeski), April 14, 1945, in Greenport.

Mr. Pemberton served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years, attaining the rank of private first class. He had served during World War II and received an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and two Purple Hearts. After World War II, he worked at Orient State Park, planting some of the trees while the road into the park was being constructed. In addition to his service, Mr. Pemberton worked for Grumman for 37 years as an aeronautical engineer.

He was a member of local gun clubs in Oysterponds and East Marion and Orient Fire Department. Family members said he loved hunting, fishing, clamming, scalloping, and tending his crab pots. He was an expert at smoking eels and fish in a 100-year-old smokehouse. Family also said that he loved to dance and that he and his wife won numerous polka contests. Mr. Pemberton was also very proud of his cole slaw, which family said was the “best anyone ever tasted.”

Mr. Pemberton is survived by his wife; his children, Marie and Peter; his grandchildren, Lisa, Jonathan and Diana; and his great-grandchildren, Dale, Meghan, Alicia and Zachary. He was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters.

A funeral Mass took place July 21 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Burial, with U.S. Marine Corps honors, was at the church cemetery.
