Update: Patients discharged after industrial accident
Both patients who were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital on Wednesday after suffering injuries in an accident at a Cutchogue recycling plant have been discharged, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
According to a police report, the two were “cleaning the inside of a large commercial trommel” when the machine was started. The report states that the individual who was running the machine at Peconic Recycling yelled to ensure no one was inside, though told police he did not hear anything and started it up with three victims inside of it.
A Riverhead man and Greenport woman were airlifted to SBU while a Riverhead woman — who was home by Thursday — was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center at the time.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called to the scene and investigate, according to police, though OSHA officials did not return a request seeking comment on Thursday.
The police report stated that the machine did approximately two cycles with the women and man inside the machine.
The accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. and Cutchogue Fire Department, Mattituck Fire Department and Southold Police all responded to the scene.
“All the people walked away from it — no broken bones,” said Peconic Recycling owner Jon Divello when reached for comment Friday. “They’re fine. They’re all doing great.”
