Driver in serious condition after vehicle flips in Southold
A Cutchogue man was airlifted to the hospital Saturday night after he reportedly suffered a “medical emergency” while driving in Southold and crashed his vehicle into a tree, Southold Town police confirmed Monday.
Thomas Soltan, 56, was driving east on Main Road in a pickup truck around 5:40 p.m. when he apparently lost control of his vehicle where the road curves and crashed into a tree near the Tuckers Lane intersection, Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley said.
The pickup truck then flipped over, trapping the victim inside, he said, adding that Mr. Soltan was traveling alone and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
There weren’t any skid marks on the road and police believe the driver had a medical emergency just before the accident, Chief Flatley said.
Southold Fire Department members arrived at the scene and freed Mr. Soltan from the vehicle, he said.
Mr. Soltan suffered internal injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency treatment, the chief added. He was listed in serious condition as of Monday afternoon, hospital officials said.
No charges have been made and police don’t suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, Chief Flatley said.
