Gavyn’s Favorite 5K brings runners to Orient for epilepsy research

More than 100 runners and walkers turned out Sunday for the first annual Gavyn’s Favorite 5K at Orient Beach State Park.

Under brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the 50s, the course followed a scenic stretch along the water, with purple race gear and bright balloons adding color to the morning.

The race honored Mattituck teen Gavyn Drago, who died at 17 after an epileptic seizure last month. The course was one of his favorites, The Suffolk Times previously reported.

Proceeds benefit the Gavyn Avery Drago Foundation, which supports epilepsy research. Organizers said the fundraising effort has raised more than $150,000.
