Sports roundup: Struggles continue for Porters football
FOOTBALL
Sept. 28: Center Moriches 38, Greenport/Southold/Mattituck 6
In a game that was delayed from Friday to Monday due to the nor’easter, the Porters (1-3) lost to the Red Devils (3-2) in a Division IV game. Brayden Kruk scored Greenport’s lone touchdown on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter. Zyaire Terry rushed 11 times for 97 yards. Namiah Santacroce added 80 yards on 10 carries. Colton Hubbard recovered a fumble. Center Moriches quarterback Jason Faller went 6-for-6 in passing for 125 yards and two TDs. He also had 73 yards on 11 rushes and a TD.
Greenport was awarded a 2-0 forfeit because Port Jefferson could not field a team this season. The teams were scheduled to play on Sept. 19.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Sept. 28: Greenport/Southold 3, Babylon 1
Riding a six-match winning streak, the Porters (8-1, 4-1) won for the third time in six days, besting host Babylon in League (4-4, 2-2), 25-17, 25-22, 12-25, 25-15. Lyla Zablotny finished with nine kills and five assists. Abigail Bednoski contributed six kills, 10 digs, and three aces. Lauryn Bednoski collected two kills, 13 assists, six digs, and four aces. Delphine Garcia added 22 digs.
On Sept. 23, Greenport bested host Mattituck (5-3, 3-2) in four matches, 25-13, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22. Zablotny accrued 13 kills, three blocks, and five aces. Abigail Bednoski had nine kills and six digs. Riley Whitecavage contributed eight kills, four digs, and three aces. Lauryn Bednoski added three kills, 17 assists, four digs and four aces.
Two days later, the Porters swept Shelter Island, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11. Leanna Zugmeyer finished with one kill, eight assists and four aces. Zablotny had six kills and five assists. Garcia had seven aces.
Sept. 28: Mattituck 3, Center Moriches 1
Laurel Richards connected for six kills, Riley Richert added three kills, 10 digs and eight aces, and Lizzie Fohrkolb added 22 digs for the Tuckers, who ended a two-match losing streak in a non-league encounter at Center Moriches (2-6, 1-3).
On Sept. 25, Mattituck lost to visiting powerhouse Port Jefferson (12-1, 6-0), 10-25, 15-25, 12-25.
BOYS SOCCER
Sept. 29: Mattituck 3, Southold 2
Jose Chapeton scored in overtime to lift the visiting Tuckers (6-2-1, 5-2-0) to a 2-1 win over Settlers (2-5-1, 2-4-0), snapping a two-game losing streak in a League VI match. Andy Mancia, who assisted on the game-winner, also found the net. Goalkeeper Cris Cuellar scored for the second consecutive day, connecting for his third goal of the season and making three saves. Brandon Moran tallied twice for Southold, and keeper Grady Brigham produced 12 saves.
A day prior, Mattituck lost at Southampton (8-1, 7-0), 2-1. Ulisses Lopez Silva scored the tie-breaking goal with 17 minutes remaining in the second half. Cuellar (four saves) converted a penalty kick in the first half.
Sept. 24: Babylon 1, Southold 0
Logan Borusso put away the lone goal in the first half for the Panthers (4-4, 4-2) in Suffolk VI. Brigham was credited with 18 saves.
GIRLS SOCCER
Sept. 29: Elwood-John Glenn 2, Mattituck/Greenport/Southold 1
Amalia Martinez scored in the first half for MSG (2-6-1, 1-6-1) in its 2-1 overtime defeat at the Knights (1-7-2, 1-6-2) in Division III. Goalkeeper Hunter Mackey made six saves. Deanne Brellas struck for the game-winner with two minutes and 10 seconds left in the second OT.
GOLF
Sept. 24: Mattituck 7, Greenport/Southold 2
Junior Sam Quartararo shot a three-over par 38 to pace the Tuckers in a League VII match at Island’s End Golf and Country Club. Mattituck avenged a 7-2 defeat to the Porters on Sept. 17. Jadyn Wilsburg won his match, 46-47, to clinch the win. The encounter was much closer than what the final score would indicate. The Tuckers won the team competition, 222-224. The winner receives three points for the overall scores.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sept. 29: East Islip 6, Mattituck/Greenport/Southold 0
Goaltender Alison Erwin produced 17 saves for the Porters (0-8) in a Division II match. Emily Bentrewicz scored her first two varsity goals for East Islip (6-4).
HOMECOMING
Oct. 3: Southold celebrates it on Friday
The Settlers will celebrate their Homecoming with three events at the high school. The Southold/Greenport girls tennis team hosts Pierson/Bridgehampton at 4:30 p.m. The MSG girls soccer team will face Miller Place at 5 p.m. The Southold boys soccer team meets Pierson at 7 p.m.
