Pridwin guest found dead after going missing during morning swim off Shelter Island

A 38-year-old guest at The Pridwin who went for a morning swim was found dead around 3 p.m. Wednesday after an hourslong search off Shelter Island, police said.

The man, who was staying at the upscale hotel with his wife, entered the water from The Pridwin’s dock around 8 a.m. and had not been seen since, Shelter Island Police Detective Sergeant Jack Thilberg said.

Shore Road, the mile-long road that runs alongside Crescent Beach and two of the Island’s popular hotels, was largely empty Wednesday morning as emergency responders gathered outside The Pridwin. The beach area in front of the hotel was closed by mid-morning as Shelter Island police and fire department vehicles filled the area.

Shelter Island police were joined by air and marine units from several agencies in the search.

The water was quiet except for a cluster of first responder boats, including marine units from Shelter Island police and fire departments and neighboring East End agencies. Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter also joined the search.

The man’s body was found beneath The Pridwin dock and pulled onto a boat, a person with knowledge told The Suffolk Times.

Police had not released his name as of Wednesday afternoon.

The disappearance comes several months after 18-year-old Timothy Magambo of Pelham died in an apparent drowning off Wades Beach on Shelter Island.

Mr. Magambo, a SUNY Albany freshman, was visiting the East End in May when he entered the water with a group of seven people shortly after 3 p.m., Det. Sgt. Thilberg said at the time.

Members of the group and a bystander later found Mr. Magambo floating face-down several hundred yards south of the point where he had last been seen wading back toward shore, police said.
