I can’t say enough about how much energy and time two-year Greenport PTA president Kim Moore-Swann puts into her job. Along with other hardworking members, she’ll spend Labor Day Saturday hosting the PTA’s annual craft fair at the school. It will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine. If you’ve got something to sell, consider securing a booth for $50 as a friend of the PTA. If you’d like to donate something for the auction, contact Sandy Martocchia, Kim Moore-Swann, Cynthia Bumble or Laura Graffagnino-Arena or call 631-846-1459. All donations are greatly appreciated.

As the season slowly moves from summer to fall and Labor Day weekend approaches, families transition from vacation to school days. Children return from camp, community summer programs end, school supply drives are in full swing and parents take their children off to college. It is a time of change when parents have to step back, take comfort in knowing they did a good job, trust that their children have grown into individuals who will make good choices and, last but not least, pray for the best!

The days are getting shorter and so is summer vacation. I’ve said before I’m one of those moms who loves summer vacation — the lack of structure and the freedom to just do whatever and go with the flow. Last week, a photo went viral online of a mother literally jumping for joy as her children, looking very unhappy, lined up waiting for the school bus. I am not one of those. Anybody else with me?

Two great opportunities are coming up to get in a round of golf next week and support a good cause while doing it. Greenport/Southold Rotary’s 36th annual golf classic is set for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Island’s End in Greenport. The day supports Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, ELIH and other Rotary service projects. Call Kevin McLaughlin at 631-765-6085 or Walter Krupski at 631-298-8026 for details or to sign up.

Memorial Day may be the unofficial start to summer, but with temperatures reaching into the 80s last week, the word around town — and in particular at the playground — is that summer is here! Moms and caregivers are scurrying to get things out of storage or buy sandals, shorts, hats and sunscreen. Remember that even though the official first day of summer isn’t until June 20 the sun is still strong enough to cause a burn. Put on your sunscreen!

Prom night is this Friday — an important event for many of our young people. At 6 p.m., the PTSA will generously host a pre-prom reception for Mattituck students on the school’s front lawn. Community members, family and friends are all invited to come see them all dressed up, having their names announced and enjoying refreshments. Then the students board buses for the Hyatt in Riverhead for a night to remember.
