You don’t get to spend a lifetime in office without being an effective legislator.

Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson), senior member in the New York State Senate, was first elected in 1976. In 40 years, he’s proven his ability to bring home the bacon for his district. He’s remained mostly scandal-free and has run for re-election without much of a fight from Democrats for decades.

Since it was founded in 1977, Times Review Media Group, as our company is known today, has published an endorsement editorial with each presidential election.

We have never once supported a Republican. In 1980 and 1996, we made no endorsements at all, our closest nods to a Republican.

If Ronald Reagan or Bob Dole couldn’t get our endorsement in those years, it’s safe to assume Republican nominee Donald Trump’s chances were fairly slim this time around.  READ

While speaking to a group of elementary school students at Floyd Memorial Library in October 2011, Greenport Village Mayor David Nyce said he might not run for re-election when his second term expired in March 2015.

“My feeling now is no,” Mr. Nyce told a student. He acknowledged that 3 1/2 years was a long time away, but said he felt that if he hadn’t been able to accomplish his goals in eight years in office, it would be time for someone else to take the helm.
