In the first of a number of scheduled events featuring both candidates for the 1st Congressional District, U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) and Democratic challenger Perry Gershon answered a battery of questions Monday evening about their environmental views, posed by some of the region’s most vocal environmental protection advocates. The two candidates vying to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District will face off in a debate hosted by the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce next week.
Incumbent Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) is running for his third term against Democrat Perry Gershon, a businessman.
The debate is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Vineyards at Aquebogue. READ
The race for New York’s 1st Congressional seat has been deemed “highly competitive,” according to a recent announcement by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. READ
The federal government decided in 2009 to sell Plum Island to the highest bidder, presumably a private owner. In 2013 Donald Trump announced his desire to purchase Plum Island to create a golf resort. Southold Town had no interest in that plan, which quickly fizzled.
Leading conservation organizations, including Save our Sound and Group for the East End, are suing to block the sale. A federal judge denied a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in January. Congress can and should act to permanently block the sale. It has failed to do so. READ

Democratic voters in the 1st Congressional District, which covers the five East End Towns, Brookhaven and part of Smithtown, came out in strong numbers Tuesday to elect Perry Gershon of East Hampton as their candidate.
He will run against GOP incumbent Lee Zeldin in November. Beyond the question of which man will be elected to represent our district is the far larger question of which party will control the House of Representatives — and perhaps the fate of Donald Trump’s presidency. READ

Perry Gershon, 56, of East Hampton won Tuesday’s Democratic primary race for the 1st Congressional District with 35.5 percent of the vote, according to results collected by the Suffolk County Board of Elections. READ
