Mattituck Park District co-commissioner Michael Ryan pitched an ambitious plan on Wednesday night to resurface the Aldrich Lane park’s field with artificial turf, saying it would be a prudent way for the district to reinvest in the often-used land. READ
Mattituck High School soccer standout Kaan Ilgin is trying out for the New York Cosmos B team.
Ilgin, a key component of the Tuckers’ New York State Class B championship team, was among prospective candidates vying for a spot on the Cosmos reserve side that will play in the National Premier Soccer League this spring and summer. (more…)

I would like to recommend that school districts look into getting helmets, like bike riders have, to protect soccer players. There are a lot of soccer players who get concussions. A soccer ball travels 40-50 mph and can hurt when a player heads the ball or when two players go up for a ball.
Lacrosse and football players wear helmets for some protection. I also feel the schools should look into helmets for field hockey.
As the old saying reminds us, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

There were several reasons why Tuckers goalkeeper Ben Knowles had tears in his eyes Sunday night.
First and foremost, his Mattituck boys soccer team had clinched the third state title in school history earlier in the day. Secondly, the team bus was escorted by local police and fire department personnel from the town line to Mattituck High School. The soccer players were also greeted by community members as Queen’s “We are the Champions” blasted outside the school. (more…)
Sunday’s state championship came 11 years to the day since the Mattituck boys soccer team last won a state title.
That victory came 21 years after the Tuckers first won a state championship in 1982.

Mattituck became the first boys high school soccer team to win five consecutive Suffolk County championships Saturday, recording a 2-0 victory over archrival Center Moriches in the wind and rain at Diamond in the Pines in Coram Saturday afternoon. (more…)
