Southold-Peconic: Practice schedule set for varsity, junior varsity and junior high fall sports

I have a suggestion for the remainder of the summer: Only sunny days allowed. If there must be rain for our local produce, let it be brief. Hope this isn’t asking too much!

I’d like to take a moment to recognize the unsung members of this community who take a trash bag with them on their daily walks and clean up litter in our town. Your efforts are noticed and much appreciated!

Jack Levin, longtime Southold resident, businessman and centenarian, was honored for his community preservation efforts last Saturday. His family was on hand as a plaque was dedicated to him at the Arshamomaque Preserve on Chapel Lane in Greenport.

A group of young Southold residents also deserve recognition for conducting their own fundraisers to benefit the North Fork Animal Welfare League: Fiona and Siobhan Merrill along with Meg and Molly Tuthill raised money at a yard sale recently. Special thanks to Noah Berry and Jack Goscinski for their help in running the lemonade stand.

Southold Sunshine Society’s hospital equipment closet needs to be replenished. Walkers with fold-down seats, bath stools, chairs and benches, commodes and wheelchairs in good condition are all needed. Call Peggy Murphy at 765-3598 if you have items to donate.

Practice for all Southold High School varsity and junior varsity sports will begin on Monday, Aug. 29. All athletes must have a recent physical and a signed athletic contract prior to practicing.

Junior high fall teams begin practice on Wednesday, Sept. 7, except for football, which begins on the 8th.

Southold Free Library’s Battle of the Books team competed against 17 other Suffolk County teams on Aug. 13. Team members include Kyra, Gage, Jamie, Katie, Eddie, Rebecca, Hayley, Emelys and Alex.

Mona McCarthy’s family wishes her a happy 88th birthday on Aug. 30.

Belated anniversary wishes to Victor and Beverly Cierach, who celebrated on Aug. 20.

The Southold Presbyterian Women will hold their monthly barn sale this Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon at the barn on Wells Avenue. All proceeds benefit East End charities.

There’s a lot of packing going on at Tim and Vickie Abrams’ house: Emily, a junior at Fairfield University, will spend her fall semester studying in Seville, Spain. She is a member of the National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society. On the same weekend Emily leaves for Spain, her sisters, twins Abby and Sara, will begin their freshman year at Fairfield. Good luck, girls!
