Mattituck-Laurel: Fundraiser for Olivia Menard, library book discussion, upcoming school events

Ten years have passed since the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11 and each year we take time out of our busy lives to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day. During this anniversary, let us remember once again the families, friends and loved ones who remain and who have lost someone they love. We will never forget!

Many of you know that a fundraiser for Olivia Menard, daughter of Chad and Jennifer Smith Menard, is planned for Saturday, Sept. 16, at Founders Landing. If you cannot make it but still wish to make a donation to help the family cope with exorbitant medical expenses, call Tina Smith at 734-8304, Kareanne Volinski at 516-658-7247 or Holly Cavalier at 555-7247. Olivia is the granddaughter of Rich and Carolyn Menard (former Mattituck school district teacher and Board of Education member) and Jeff and Susie Smith (a current school board member). These families have always given back to their communities. Now it’s our turn to help them. No amount is too small!

On anniversaries, we remember the good times and toast the years ahead. Three couples toast their lives together this week: Joe and Dot Pfaff and Sandy and Rick Gannon on Sept. 9 and David and Suzanne Martinez on the 11th.

Blowing out birthday candles this week are Jenny Stype on the 10th; Lexington Horton and Louis Troisi on the 11th; Tim Costello, Cissy Scaramucci and Kim Ulmet on the 12th; Taylor Gildersleeve and Krsity Palmer on the 13th; and Carolyn Dougherty on the 14th.

Bev Wowak wants to let you know that “Brooklyn” by Colin Toibin is the title for the next Mattituck–Laurel Library book discussion scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. Copies can be picked up at Bev’s desk.

Now that school’s open, your calendar pages begin to fill. Just two reminders: Sept. 20 is Back-to-School Night at the high school and Homecoming is set for Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. Check the school website at for more about the current school year and upcoming events.

How did 24 years fly by so quickly? A very special birthday wish, filled with love, goes out this week to my daughter, Vanessa, who celebrates up in Boston on Sept. 12.
