A Mattituck man led police on a high-speed car chase through Mattituck before he was stopped and charged with DWI just after 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 17, according to police reports.

Police said they attempted to stop Phillip Wanat, 20, for a traffic violation on Bergen Avenue, after which he fled the scene at a speed of up to 85 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone, before turning in to a private driveway, where he was arrested.

In addition to DWI, Mr. Wanat was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. He was taken to police headquarters and held for a morning arraignment.
