Greenport man violates order of protection for second time in two weeks

A 53-year-old Greenport man was arrested after violating an order of protection for a second time and threatening to hurt a man Thursday night, Southold Town police said.

Robert Lee Smith got into an argument with a 60-year-old man on Third Street at about 7:40 p.m., police said.

The man had an order of protection against Mr. Smith, according to a report.

Mr. Smith was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal contempt, a class E felony, after he said he wanted to hurt the victim, which violated the order of protection, police said.

He was also arrested July 15 after threatening the same man with a kitchen knife and violating the order of protection, according to a prior Suffolk Times story.

Mr. Smith was transported to police headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.
