A Cutchogue man’s car caught on fire last night after he swerved to avoid hitting a deer on Route 48 in Peconic, causing his car to flip over.

According to Southold Police, the 30-year-old man was driving westbound on the road around 11:30 p.m. when he swerved and left the roadway, overturning in the median and landing on the car’s roof.

The vehicle then caught on fire, police said.

Cutchogue Fire Department responded, extinguished the fire and evaluated the driver, who was uninjured and refused medical attention.
