A blessing for the animals

Computer, ESL classes at CAST

Community Action of Southold Town will hold ESL classes at its Greenport headquarters, 311 Front St., every Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. starting Oct. 5. Computer training classes will also begin in October.

Forum on faith in America

Four members of the local clergy will discuss the question “Has America Turned Back to God?” at a free symposium on Monday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at Peconic Landing in Greenport.

Registration for religious ed

First Universalist Church of Southold will hold an open house and registration for religious education classes on Saturday, Sept. 25, 3 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 26, noon to 2 p.m. The curriculum includes classes appropriate for grade levels K-12. Forum on drug abuse

Charles Bernard of the Suffolk County DEA will address Southold School District parents and the community about the ever-growing use of heroin and pharmaceutical drugs, today, Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Shelter needs cat food

The North Fork Animal Welfare League needs bags of dry cat food to replenish its depleted community cat food bank. The food is distributed to needy cat owners who otherwise would be unable to feed their pets.

Donations may be dropped off at the Southold Animal Shelter on Peconic Lane in Peconic, seven days a week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Explore the art of prayer

The Spiritual Renewal Center at First Parish Church will offer an eight-week exploration of the art of praying and meditating with scripture.

The study group, part of the center’s Prayer, Bible Study and Faith Sharing initiative, begins Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at The Parsonage, 7 Lagoon Court, Jamesport.

Be more energy aware

Saturday, Oct. 2, is Riverhead Energy Awareness Day. Presented by the Town of Riverhead and the North Fork Environmental Council, the event aims to encourage residents and businesses to work together to learn about and implement more effective, cost-efficient alternative energy solutions.

The day will feature demonstrations by local businesses of energy-efficient cars, appliances, construction materials along the Peconic riverfront from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also visit solar-powered local homes and ride free on the solar-powered boat SunCatcher, built by GoSolar of Aquebogue.

At 7 p.m., Isidore Doroski of Riverhead’s Energy Advisory Committee will give a presentation about “peak oil” at the Senior Nutrition Center in Aquebogue.
