The high school was alive last week with the sounds of music, laughter, roaring crowds, slurping soup and conversation. Whether it was watching a basketball game, chuckling at Charlie Brown or catching up with old friends while helping a good cause, a round of applause goes to everyone from teachers to students to parents and extended families to community members for helping lift the dreary cloud of winter and put a smile on all our faces. The school truly is the hub of the community!

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and the East End Lions Club will host its 57th corned beef and cabbage dinner at the Soundview on Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, noon to 8 p.m. each day. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets are available at Hart’s Hardware and Robert’s Jewelers in Southold and Peconic Liquors in Cutchogue or by calling Pam Graeb at 734-7136 or Shelley Case at 734-6742. Proceeds support local scholarships, charitable community work and the Lions’ sight-related work.

Jesse Grathwohl was chosen to perform with the All-County Percussion Ensemble at SCMEA’s Day of Percussion last weekend. The event included workshops and performances by professional percussionists, including the NYPD Drumline. Jesse has been accepted to the percussion studio at Crane School of Music, SUNY/Potsdam, where he will attend college in September.

Matt Mauterelli and Dan Salice will perform with the All-County Jazz Ensemble this weekend at the SCMEA Day of Jazz. Bravo!

Congratulations to Ashley Finger, who found out this week she is in the top 10 percent of the freshmen class at Davidson College. This honor will be recognized with a dinner later this spring. I ran into Ashley when she was visiting over winter break and she is loving her college experience. Keep up the good work!
