Mattituck-Laurel: a knitting club, cocktail party and spaghetti dinner

Easter week always brings visits from local students away at college as well as many of our children who are taking a moment out of their hectic lives to enjoy family. Happy Easter! May you all spend some quality time with those you love.

Do you knit or crochet? Do you want to share your passion and conversation? A knitting club is beginning at Mattituck-Laurel Library on Monday, May 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. This gathering is for everyone who knits or crochets and is working on a project and wants to share ideas or perhaps even help someone else learn a new technique. It’s free and all skill levels, from novice to expert, are invited. Sounds like fun!

Speaking of fun, the Mattituck Fire Department has set Saturday, May 21, as the date for its annual cocktail party. For a $50 donation, you’ll receive a raffle ticket and entrance to the party to enjoy food, beverages and music by Points East. First prize in the raffle is $10,000, second is $2,500 and third is $500. Get your tickets at Wendy’s Deli or from any MFD member or call 484-7283.

There’s still time to donate to the 2010-11 Mattituck Community Fund Drive. Send your contributions to the fund at P.O. Box 147, Mattituck, NY 11952.

The May 24 book discussion at the library will be about “The Sunne in Splendour” by Sharon Kay Penman. Bev Wowak has copies if you want to pick one up.

Jean and Ernie Stumpf are returning from Marco Island just in time to celebrate the birthday of their granddaughter, Jessica Stumpf, who turns 18 today, April 21. Happy birthday!

Also celebrating this week are Nan Reeve and Joanne Davis Slotkin on the 22nd; Kevin Pumillo and Kelly Tuthill on the 24th; Joan Simicich, Courtney Ficner and Dana Demchuk on the 25th; and Byron Brinkman, Nicholas Troisi and Andrea Nydeggar on the 26th.

Students Against Destructive Decisions has canceled the Family Game Night scheduled for April 28.

Why not take a break from cooking and support our baseball players and cheerleaders? On Friday, April 29, in the high school cafeteria, the Mattituck Athletic Booster Club will host a “Taste of Italy” spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Purchase tickets — $10 for adults and $8 for students and children — at Love Lane Sweet Shoppe, any varsity baseball game or at the door. Takeout will be available.

Ms. Papadopoulos’ kindergartners did a great job teaching Board of Education members about recycling at last week’s meeting. They read from books they wrote, showed projects they made from recycled items and inspired us to make the world a better place! What a great way to honor Earth Day!

Bravo to the casts and crews of “Lockdown” and “The Audition.” For three nights, they created characters and showed the audience what true storytelling is all about. To the seniors who acted in their last performances at MHS, we know we will see you again on stage in another place and time. Best of luck!
