Southold-Peconic: A parade, a barn sale and students of the month

Note to self: For the summer months, do all errands during the week, as early in the morning as possible. Let’s all be mindful of each other’s safety as we travel our local roads during these busy months.

Plan to be around for the Southold Village Merchants’ 14th annual Fourth of July parade beginning at noon. Children who are riding bicycles will line up on Hobart Road at 11:45 a.m.

A barn sale sponsored by the women of First Presbyterian Church will be held this Saturday, June 25, 8 a.m.-noon, at the barn on Wells Avenue. All proceeds benefit East End charities.

He was ranked in the top 5 percent of his class of 494 students and will attend Texas A&M in the fall. Stephen is the son of SHS Class of 1978 alumnus Steve Dow, who is now principal of Goodnight Middle School in San Marcos.

Southold Sunshine Society members held their June meeting at the Southold Town Recreation Center earlier this month. While the group continues to spread sunshine during the summer months, no meetings are held. Anyone interested in joining the group may attend the Sept. 12 meeting at 11:30 a.m.

The Southold Historical Society was a happy flurry of activity during “Step Back in History” week. Members of the society’s education of youth committee entertained youngsters from Southold Elementary School with a series of daily programs, including visits to Horton Point Lighthouse, the Main Road museum complex and the historic burying ground at the Presbyterian Church. Sixth-graders received a “passport” recalling their seven years in the program.

Jean Cochran was the winner of the stained glass jewelry box handcrafted and donated by Robert Hamill in the Friends of the Library’s June raffle. Linda Wenczel has created a tote bag for July’s raffle and the Friends have filled it with books. It’s perfect for the beach! The drawing will take place July 15.

Family and friends will fill the district auditorium this Saturday for the Southold High School Class of 2011’s commencement ceremony. Good luck to the graduates as they move on to an exciting future!
