Greenport: A book sale, an arts and crafts show, and a golf classic

Summer is slipping away, slowly but surely. I’m truly amazed that July is half over already. If time flies when you’re having fun, I must be having a blast this summer!

Members of the Class of 1976 came back to their roots over the Independence Day weekend to celebrate the passage of 25 years since they graduated from the hallowed halls of Greenport High School. Rumor has it that a good time was had by all who attended.

You rarely see his name in the paper except for the police reports, so I’m happy to include (Judge) Bill Price here this week. He and his wife, Lillian, hosted a lovely gathering Saturday evening at their beautiful new home. Approximately 40 people gathered on their patio to take in the Shelter Island fireworks display. The company was wonderful and the view spectacular. Thanks, Lillian and Bill!

Earlier on Saturday, the Dinizios gathered for another family celebration as Lisa Dinizio, daughter of Pat and Bill, became the bride of Ken Chapman at a beautiful service and reception at East Wind. Congratulations, Lisa and Ken; I wish you a lifetime of happiness together.

The Friends of Floyd Memorial Library will continue their half-price sale on gently used books on Monday, July 18 and 25, 10 a.m. to noon in the Book Nook on the library’s lower level.

Laura Wilson is hard at work helping the members of Holy Trinity Church raise money for new curtains for the parish hall stage. She’s looking for artists for a fine arts and crafts show to be held at the church Aug. 12 and 13. If you’d like to sell your wares at the show, contact Laura at 724-953-3382 or 477-6759.

Last call (in my column, anyway) for participation in the seventh annual gridiron golf classic on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Island’s End to benefit the Porters football team. There’s a limit of 75 golfers and you must register by July 21. To learn more, contact Barbara Thorp at 477-6114 or [email protected]

A couple of special birthday wishes this week. First, happy birthday to Rodney Wells, who will celebrate his 103rd on July 18. And Alyssa Jensen, granddaughter of Nancy and Richard Jensen, who turns 6 on July 14. She will arrive on the North Fork from Port St. Lucie, Fla., later in the month for a big family celebration.

A special birthday wish also goes to someone very special in my life. Twenty-eight years ago, God blessed Jim and me with a son who forever changed our lives. He’s smart, he’s got the best sense of humor of anyone I know and he’s enriched our lives in so many ways that it would take a year’s worth of columns to list them all. Happy birthday to our son, Jeff, who celebrates on June 17.

Also celebrating this week are Steven Quillin, Dick Hulse and Ayania Smith on the 14th; Baxter Townsend and my cousin Kerry Heaney on the 15th; Dean Karavas, Warren Corazzini, Cheryl Pope and Joey Stevens on the 16th; Sara Flythe and Georgia Young on the 17th; Richie Hubbard, Billy Doucett and Elizabeth Powe on the 18th; Jim’s uncle Bill Dinizio on the 19th; and my sweetheart of a friend, Stephanie Gorga, and Charles Cisterino on the 20th.

The happiest of anniversaries is wished this week to Lillian and Bob White, who celebrate 63 years of wedded bliss on July 15, and Beverly and Jim Sage, married 35 years on July 18.
