Greenporters will have an opportunity next week to make their voices heard on the proposed North Ferry rate hike pending before the Suffolk County Legislature.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 5:30 p.m. Greenport Village Board members will conduct a hearing at the Third Street firehouse to gather input that will be compiled and forwarded to county legislators.

The ferry company is seeking a 7.8 percent rate hike, the first since June 2004.

That would increase same day round-trip tickets for non-Shelter Island residents to $15, up 15.3 percent from the current $13. The non-discounted one-way fare would go up $1, from $9 to $10, an 11 percent increase.

For island residents, the price of a book of 10 round-trip tickets would rise 8.3 percent, from $48 to $52, That’s an increase of 20 cents per trip. The cost of a five-day round-trip pass would increase from $22 to $26, up 18 percent or 40 cents a trip.

For non-residents, a book of 10 same day round-trip tickets would cost $79, up from $72, and the price of a book of 10 one-way tickets would rise from $57 to $62.

Six-day commuter passes would no longer be offered.
