Orient: Ellen Williams reading at Floyd Memorial on 9/11, library budget vote Tuesday

OK, so Tony Danza isn’t dead. My rule of thumb is to Google a story before I forward it, and I didn’t forward it — unless you count telling everyone who walked by my office door, which was three people. I did Google it and it was headline news. What type of “bozo” would start something like that? Let’s spread good news instead.

I guess the good news for many of the mothers out there is that school is now open for the new year. Please watch out for our kids waiting for buses, riding their bikes, etc.

The other good news is that most folks seem to have their power back on. Wasn’t that a great sign in front of the fire department listing times for hot showers? Oysterponds is a great community to live in.

Apparently no one wants to share their memories of 9/11, since there were no emails to [email protected]. With late September approaching, perhaps we could make it Oysterponds remembers Hurricane Gloria — or Irene.

Speaking of Irene, Aly and Ryan did not tie the knot Aug. 28 — it would have been too soggy — but were happily able to reschedule for late in the fall. They’ll have a great story to tell their kids.

While we are remembering, remember to attend East Marioneer Ellen Williams’ reading this Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. Her book, “We Are All in This Together,” features memories from more than 40 folks including many Oysterponders.

After you enjoy one of the many wonderful programs at the library, don’t forget to vote for the library budget on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

While we’re talking money, several appeals have gone out recently. Orient United Methodist Church is hoping the community will respond to its recent appeal letter. This historic institution has been hit hard by the economy and the aging of the population.

Speaking of aging, octogenarian and all-around great lady Kay Brennan will fold her North Fork tent and move up-island to be with family. Our loss is Bellmore’s gain. May the wind always be at your back.

Orient Congregational Church will hold a special service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, remembering the events of a decade ago but putting more emphasis on “Peace on Earth.” The whole community is invited.

The 10 a.m. worship service at Orient United Methodist Church on Sunday will feature a reading of the 9/11 remembrance poem “The Names,” by U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins.

The 8 a.m. beach service will also continue through September, weather permitting. Call 323-2665 for details.

That same phone number is the one to call to register your child (grades 1-6) for Sunday school, hereafter referred to as Tuesday School. Classes for the 2:50-3:30 p.m. classes will start on June 13.

Oysterponds Community Activities’ annual meeting is this Saturday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. Join the board as they show off all the wonderful improvements done this year and reveal plans for the future. They also plan to honor Ed Wright Sr. for his decades of service to OCA and the community.

The Oysterponds Rod and Gun Club’s annual meeting will be Monday, Sept. 12, at Poquatuck Hall at 7:30 p.m. Everyone who’s interested is welcome.

Fly your flags; show the world we are proud of our freedom. God bless America.
